Children know the stakes are high. They know that their performance in math is important and they want to do well. We need to give them tools and activities that help math make sense to them so they can succeed. It’s actually okay and helpful to let them know that Zillio is all about math. Through exploration, games, and lessons they will be learning about and succeeding in math.
If you are working with children in upper grades who have struggled with math, you will also need to let them know that Zillio is not dumbing math down. Instead we are giving them the power to perform at an even higher level of math. They will understand the patterns, procedures, and uses of specific math concepts and how they all fit together. Many of the activities are designed to remediate a more basic skill while they are learning about a more advanced one. So you can gracefully give children the intervention they need, without making them feel set apart.
