Zillio: A Zillion Ways to Play Math (tm)

Land Grab for Multiplication

About this game:

This is the third game in the Land Grab series. Players try to capture your land by knowing multiplication facts. Role-playing is important in this game. You are royalty or a land baron and own everything: be haughty and condescending. It provides motivation. When players capture parcels of land, lament the fact that they are acquiring too much! When they point to steps near the top tell them “ Oh no that parcel has the view of the bridge, I didn’t want you to get that one”, etc. You make this activity a game vs. math problems.

Tips & Tricks:

If you are working with a child who would benefit from practicing double-digit mental addition problems, add the following to the game. After he/she has claimed some number of parcels of land, ask them if they read the “fine print” of the contract. When they say no, explain that if they have captured land worth more than x (pick a number less than what you think will be the total) they own the entire mountain! Most often he/she will keep adding well past the limit you set. If they do, tell them you are glad to find out how much they own, because that is how much tax they will have to pay you!
