Zillio: A Zillion Ways to Play Math (tm)

Math Your Way: You Decide How Best to Use Zillio to Support Your Goals

Develop Mastery in 10 Essential Skills

Children must build a solid foundation in these 10 essential skills to succeed in middle school math and beyond. For each of these skills, children will understand the concept, develop fluency, and learn how and when to apply the skills in problem solving. The Zillio hands-on activities focus on concrete examples. The lesson is then expanded so children will understand how to apply the concept abstractly and to manipulate very large and very small numbers beyond the physical representation of Zillio.

Standards-Based Activities

We begin with a state or national standard. In order to address different learning styles, each concept is expressed both visually and kinesthetically. Next we develop a lesson to teach the concept and a game to develop fluency and use the concept in problem solving and strategy. And finally we develop worksheets to reinforce the concept and learn how to express it algebraically.

During the hands-on activities most children construct a mental image of the procedures. They can then use this mental image to guide them in recalling the specific rules and sequences when they are transitioning the skills to algebraic representations on paper.

Our activities have been correlated to both NCTM and California standards. Because our emphasis is on the integration of math concepts and skills, often a particular activity covers more than one standard and sometimes even more than one grade band. As you conduct the activity you may choose to emphasize or deemphasize segments to meet your needs.

Helping You Get Started and Through Every Step of the Way

You probably didn’t learn how to play Monopoly or create a spreadsheet by reading the manual. We don’t expect you to teach math at a deeper conceptual level using a new approach without additional training and support.

We have a number of programs to help you succeed in implementing Zillio:
